Girl and Bird

Having a pet can be a very positive thing for you and your family. Pet birds are often among some of the most popular pets that you can get. They are great for families with children and lots of responsibilities, because as long as you do a few things for them, you will find that they demand less of your time than cats and dogs do. However, like all animals, birds might get sick. Because they are less common than cats and dogs, and because you are going to interact with your bird much less than your cat or dog, you might find it difficult to tell when your bird is sick. Luckily, there are a few things that you can do to make sure you are paying good attention to your pet bird, and to make sure that you notice when they are sick.

Bird

Listen to the Song

One of the best ways to tell when your pet bird is sick is to listen for changes in their song. Singing is the way that birds communicate with the outside world. You might think that they are just chattering, but if you pay close attention, you will begin to notice that your bird has a distinct sound and makes noises at different times of the day. It will probably have one song that it has in the morning, and one in the evening. Also, your bird might make noises when it sees you, or sees other members of the family. There will be noises that it makes when you change its food or water, or when you put something in the cage. As a responsible pet owner, you should be aware of these noises. That way, you can notice when they change. If your bird stops making the noises that they have always made, or makes new noises you have never heard before, they might be sick.

Bird and Toy

Look at Their Movements

Like sounds, your bird will develop movements that you should be able to recognize. You should notice where it likes to perch, and what kind of movements it likes to do during the day and night. If you see that your bird isn’t moving as much as it usually does or is sitting on the floor of the cage instead of on its perch, it might be sick, and you should pay some attention to it. Also, if it is moving much more than usual, and trying to fly out of the cage, it might also be sick, and you should talk to your vet immediately.

As a cat person myself, I never tire of the cat themed gifts that I have received. I’ve gotten everything from themed bandanas to a fake unicorn horn that made one of our cats, Olive, look majestic. One of my favourite gifts was a sign from my mother “A House is Not a Home Without a Cat.” This pretty much sealed my fate as one of those “cat people.” I have no shame about it. You can get this sign at Hallmark.

Chances are, the other cat lovers in your life will not tire of cat themed gifts, either. With the Christmas holidays coming up next month, here are some great gift ideas for cat lovers.

Cat Circuit Toy

Gifts from Catit

If you’re looking for something unique and fun, I recently came across products from Catit at their pop-up in Toronto. Our kitten, Sharon, especially enjoys the Senses 2.0 Play Circuit. It is a circuit with a ball that rips around a closed track with a peekaboo cover. The cat tries to paw at the ball, and it’s impossible for them to get the ball out so they’re continually playing with it. It’s also affordable if you buy it as one piece. If you’re opting to buy a more expensive gift, you can buy the whole Senses set for a cat lover. We also found that our cats loved the Catit creamy treats. You can purchase Catit products online at the Catit website, Amazon, or Petco.

Cat Selfie

A Forever Photo

There are a lot of great gifts that you can give to cat lovers, although photo frames are among the most popular.  Photo frames are very affordable and make an excellent gift for anyone who owns a cat or other pet. Those who own more than one cat will truly appreciate photo frames as it gives them a chance to show off all their pets. Come Christmas time, my husband and I are going to send out pictures with our cats in ugly sweaters as a Christmas card. You can get mega creative with a framed photo. Cat lovers can also frame pictures of their pet for memories as and keep them forever.

Outdoor Cat

It All Depends on the Cat

Before you give a cat lover a gift, you should take into consideration what type of cat the person owns. There are several breeds out there including tabby, pure breeds, calico, Persian, and of course the infamous Siamese breeds. We have a Ragdoll and Maine Coon at home, both are the polar opposites in personality and looks. Like us, someone may own several cats as well, which is why you should know a little bit about the breed or breeds someone owns before you get them a gift.

You should take into consideration whether or not the cat lover has an outdoor or indoor cat.  Cats, unlike dogs, are more than happy to spend all of their time outdoors. Outdoor cats can be a lot of fun, especially if the owner spends a lot of time outdoors. Cats have a natural urge to go outside, even if the owner has an indoor cat.

Cats who reside indoors are less exposed to sicknesses and common health problems that outdoor cats are exposed to. Indoor cats are almost always trained to use the litter box, which makes them easy to maintain for their owners. Nearly all gifts that you can get for a cat lover are designed for those who keep their pet indoors.

Catnip

Get Cats High with Catnip

If you’re looking for a humorous yet exciting gift, you can always give the gift of catnip. Catnip is one of the most popular treats for cats, as it’s a naturally occurring plant that has a unique effect on a cat. Catnip gives off aromatic oils that will often make cats appear to be high and very hyper, which is always hilarious entertainment for both owners and guests. Catnip is completely safe for cats to consume, often times being included with gifts such as chew toys and play balls. Cats love catnip and so do the people around them, so it’s always a hit as a gift.

Cat Gifts

Other Gifts to Consider

Other great gifts for cat lovers include decorative mats with cat pictures, which you can get personalized for the owner if you prefer. You can also give cat videos, musical cat dolls, cat shaped mail boxes, toys and treats, and various other goodies that are directed towards cat lovers. If you do your shopping on the Internet, you’ll find that the possibilities are endless. Cats are very popular pets, meaning that you’ll have no trouble finding the perfect gift for the cat lover in your life.

Are you a pet owner who thinks that you may be allergic to your dog?  If you are, you may be looking for guidance. After all, there is nothing worse than realizing that you are allergic to your beloved pet or pets.

Pet Allergies

Do you Have an Allergy for Sure?

One of the first things that you will want to do is make sure that you do have a pet allergy.  Sometimes, the symptoms of having a pet allergy can be caused by other allergies or by another medical illness, such as the flu or the common cold. Those who suffer from pet allergies may experience a runny nose, sneezing, nasal congestion, postnasal drip, develop a skin rash, or have difficulty breathing. If you experience severe allergy symptoms or if you would like conformation that you do have a pet allergy, schedule a visit with a healthcare professional.

As for how you can go about treating your pet allergies that are due to your dog, you can remove the dog from your home. If you are unable to do so or if you choose not to, you will want to see if you can find it a good home. Friends or family members who are willing to take your pet are often considered the best option. Even if you want to keep your dog with you, there are still a number of steps that you can take to seek relief from some common dog allergy symptoms.

Woman and Dog

Keeping Dogs Out of the Bedroom

The best way to limit your allergy symptoms that can be attributed to your dog is to keep your dog or dogs out of your bedroom. The bedroom is the room where we spend most of our time.  For that reason, your dog or dogs should be kept out of your bedroom. Doing so may limit the number of irritating symptoms you display. It may also help to get you a good night of sleep. In addition to the bedroom, it is also important to examine other rooms that you may spend a good portion of your time. Consider keeping your dog or dogs out of that room as well.

Allergies in Dogs

Keep Dogs Away from Furniture

Another great tip involves not letting your dog or dogs climb on your furniture. This is particularly important if you like to lie down on your couch or rest in a reclining chair. You do not want to have pet dander and hair in your face. If you must, covers can be used. There are a number of cloth style covers that can be used. They are a great alternative to the unattractive plastic covers. With that in mind, should you use cloth covers, be sure to wash them every few days or when too much pet hair accumulates.

Air Purifiers are Golden

Investing in an air purifier is another way that you can seek relief from a dog allergy, without having to find a new home for your beloved pet. Air purifiers work by eliminating air particles, including pet dander. It is best if you search online for air purifiers that are designed to help those with allergies. These air purifiers can easily be found with a standard internet search.  Also, HEPA air filters and HEPA air purifiers are known for their amazing results.

Get Into the Vacuuming Routine

Vacuuming as much as possible is another way to manage the symptoms that you may be experiencing due to having a dog allergy. In addition to vacuuming often, be sure to take a good, close look at the vacuum cleaner you are using. There are now vacuum cleaners that use HEPA filters and they come highly rated and recommended. In fact, there are even some vacuum cleaners that are targeted towards and marketed towards pet owners. You should examine these vacuum cleaners.

The above-mentioned steps are a few of the many steps that you can take to seek relief from allergies that you may be suffering due to close contact with your dog. As a reminder, a doctor may be able to prescribe you prescription medication or recommend over-the-counter products that may work just as well. With that said, remember that treating allergies, especially pet allergies, naturally is usually much safer.

Hermit Crab Aquarium

Hermit crabs have been popular pets for adults and children alike for many years, and there are many who appreciate their unique beauty. With the increasing popularity of bringing a piece of the sea into the home, it is no wonder that the notion of introducing hermit crabs into a saltwater aquarium has been gaining in popularity.

Just as there are many types of hermit crabs that can be kept as pets, so too are there many different breeds which can be kept in aquariums. Not all have the same chance for survival if kept in captivity; however, it is important that the aquarium owner make sure that they are familiar with all of the specific needs of their hermit crabs before they are introduced to the aquarium. Below is an introduction to some of the most common breeds of aquarium hermit crabs.

Hermit Crab

  • Red Hermit Crab (Dardanus megistos) – Also known as the White Spotted Hermit Crab, this crab has red legs with black edged spots. It is not a safe addition to a reef aquarium but is very useful in keeping algae growth to a minimum in a community aquarium. Only one crab per aquarium is allowed, these crabs are very protective of their personal space.
  • Red Legged Hermit Crab (Clibanarius digueti) – These Mexican crabs are a great addition to any aquarium, eating algae from the tank. They demand a low level of copper in the water as their bodies cannot survive in the presence of this metal.
  • Scarlet Hermit Crab, or Reef Hermit Crab (Paguristes cadenati) – This hermit crab generally remains small, around two inches across, and has a red body with yellow eyestalks. They are very helpful in keeping the algae growth inside the aquarium under control; however, if insufficient algae is available inside the tank, they must be fed with dried seaweed.
  • Common Hermit Crab (Pagurus bernhardus) – These crabs are more common in Europe but can be found in other countries as well. They are also known as the soldier crab.

Blue Hermit Crab

Since these crabs carry their homes around on their backs, it is important that they constantly have new shells available to them when they have outgrown their previous shell. A hermit crab in an improperly sized shell cannot grow properly. These shells can be purchased from a pet store or an online retailer or, if the owner is familiar with the requirements of their hermit crabs, these shells can often be found on a beach. If the owner chooses to go out into the wild and collect their own shells, it is important that they choose the proper type of shell for their hermit crab to inhabit. As sea anemones are often an important part of the hermit crab’s natural environment, they make excellent tank mates, eating the leftovers when the hermit crab has finished a meal and cutting back on the amount of tank waste.

Crab

Hermit crabs are an intriguing addition to any tank and require very little maintenance once their owners are familiar with their needs and their habits. With proper care, they can live for quite a while, providing endless hours of joy for their owners and their families.
